Study and conservation of Black Stork Ciconia nigra L. in Ukraine: 2017-2024
The work summarizes the results of 8 years of research and practical measures to protect the black
stork in Ukraine. All activities were carried out within the framework of the international project
"Ciconia-Ukraina", with the support of the Ciconia Foundation (Liechtenstein). During the study
period, the situation with the incorrect interpretation of the size of the protected area around the black
stork nest in Ukraine, which is enshrined in the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No.
499 "On the Procedure for Creating Protected Areas to Preserve Biodiversity in Forests and the
Procedure for Creating Protected Areas to Preserve Objects of the Red Book of Ukraine", was
corrected. The impact of forest cutting in the Carpathians on the nesting of the black stork was studied.
In 2019, in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, an Action Plan
for the Conservation of the Black Stork in Ukraine was developed. This is the first document that was
approved at the state level and recommended for implementation by relevant orders. Annual monitoring
of known nests and search for new nesting sites are carried out in order to mark nestlings. Together
with the Kyiv Zoo and the Rehabilitation Center for Wild Animals of the Galician National Nature
Park, a project to reintroduce black stork chicks raised in captivity into nature was successfully
implemented. Research into the feeding of chicks of the species was continued. The main reasons for
the collapse of nests were identified. Important results were obtained on the course of the nesting period
in nests using camera traps. Ecological and educational campaigns were conducted among the
population and forestry workers. An ecological trail “Visiting the Black Stork” was created.
